2:45am ... it's about that time ol' chaps ...

I love it when that mood comes over you and you need to do something, urgently...blog time.

I think Ive turned into the most epic people watcher ever over the last couple of months. I've really been having a hard financial time recently and it's been harder than ever to stay motivated on those days when you wake up and think....... I would love to just have an affair with my bed all day.
I'm going to just put up a few photos of some of the things I've been watching/doing since it's been ages since I've spoken... and also because it's what I've been doing.... watching (not to sound too spooky and stalkery)

It's safe to say that whenever there is no money...there are people and animals and things and bits and there is the outside...

I was walking through Liverpool city centre the other week with absolutely no purpose other than to see what was going on in the city and try to take some inspirations and good energy...I felt like this guy saved my life...

What an utter dude he was. I walked past him and was also listening to music through headphones (as usual) and I saw him and smiled...and as I carried on walking I felt this massive rush of happiness as I realised what had just happened, so I walked back and took this photo of him, he gave me a sticker with a smiley face on it and I just thought; if everyone did just genuinely smile more...the world has got to be better for everyone.
No joke, not romanticised, just genuinely, better for everyone.

Fine Line at Newquay Art8 Festival 12th-14th April

So, I mentioned last year that one of my collaborations will be shown at the Newquay Art8 Festival this month...here it is! Starting from tomorrow, the festival will be showing loads of different brilliant art in various venues across the town centre.

Fine Line is a video collaboration I wrote that was filmed with artist Katie Ness in 2011 and produced in 2012; making it a very wonderful collaborative experience that has brought a lot of things I'd been working on together into one recorded piece that is very special and important to me.

Now it will be making its debut at the Art8 festival for 3 days running in a studio cinema at 'Tall Trees' (on Tolcarne Rd) : Friday 12th - Sunday 14th April.
I would love to get as many people as possible to come and have a look and tell me their feedback, so if you are free and fancy a couple of days seeing some art in a beautiful creative area....come to this!

You can preview the film here to get a sneaky preview

http://youtu.be/aHik8i3F8cc

Here are our statements that go with the piece for you to get an idea of how and why it was made:

Nicola Hardman:

"Fine Line started out as a casual conversation between creative friends. I am a performance artist/musician and my friend Katie Ness who is the other part of this collaboration is a mixed media artist/dance performer. I had written a short piece of theatre that I intended for stage that eventually became the screenplay for this piece. Katie had just exhibited her most recent project entitled "Maya's Rapture" which in short, is a video installation including physical dimensions set for a gallery space. It is based around the theme of alter ego's and psyche, which interests me greatly and happened to be some of the main themes that inspired my stage piece I had written previously. As we talked about working together and topics that interested us both as artists and human beings, we agreed that I would adapt the stage piece for a screenplay continuing to explore alter ego's and psyche and Katie would film and produce it as a video installation. I came to name it Fine Line because when I question psyche it draws parallel lines in the psychology of the soul and I question desire, which leads me to questioning my ambitions, love and sexuality. I purposefully wanted Fine Line to be interdisciplinary not only as a way to incorporate other dimensions of performance like the type of work that inspires me, but also as an invisible metaphor for the main inspirations of this piece which are; alter ego's, multiple personality disorder, sexuality and of course psyche. My wish is not to make a preaching statement to the spectator, but to share a personal exploration using my own experiences and understanding of the factors that have inspired Fine Line in collaboration with another artist providing an interpretation of the same concepts through art direction of my script. I would like the spectator to experience the psychology of the video, the interpretation of the script, the text, sound and musical composition that is included in the piece and connect to their own psyche questioning their own experiences of alter ego's, multiple personality disorder sexuality and psyche."

Katie Ness:

After the production of 'Maya's Rapture' a video/performance installation exploring my Alter-ego I wanted to Analyze another artist's second self. Knowing that the actress Nicola Hardman already had a second persona within her identity it seemed natural to work with her to bring both her characters together in a video/performance. Surprisingly she already had a script written based on the same concept when I pitched the idea for a collaboration. The script was originally for a stage performance and so we had to adapt it to work in a video setting. I am a person who reads extensively about many topics and my style has foundations in Persian Mysticism, Indian Philosophy and Jungian dream analysis. Everything that I am as an Artist and as an Oriental Dancer is fueled by these teachings. So in Fine line you can see references to concepts of Magic Realism, reincarnation and exploring the subconscious mind. I edited the film in such a way that likened it to vintage silent movies and to the chaos and that play on imperfections that dreams bring. I integrated concepts of eternal opposites through out 'Fine Line" from Legendary Persian stories of the garden of paradise versus modern, enclosed walled structures, Dante's Inferno aspects of Hell and the state of Limbo and archetypal dream symbolisms like Water, the pocket watch, the mannequin and the spider. I'd like the spectator to perhaps see a part of themselves in these Personas Nicola has inside her as well as relate to and explore the dreamscape created via editing techniques.

I hope to see you all there...last time I visited Newquay I was trying to surf...somehow I don't think that will be possible this time, but I'm taking my wetsuit all the same ;)

Thank you for reading

Time out is for thinking, working and exciting things...

Hello :)

So it's been two months pretty much to the day that I've felt the want to write a blog.

Boo! Major time out.

Time out is for working...

I have finished my tour with the wonderful Zest Theatre so I am no longer acting as a teenage boy every day, which is, admittedly very very sad... 'Deano' is absolutely one of the best characters to get into I have ever done.

The tour was intense and incredible, and our cast have definitely been one of the closest so far. Mister Ed Carfrae, actor and excellent stand up comic (left) and Mister Joe Murray actor and all time great singer-songwriter (right).
WATCH OUT FOR THESE GUYS!
Also follow them on twitter to see what they're upto next...
@EdCarfrae  @JosephDMurray

In parallel to the tour, I have been working with the Zest team on a very exciting new project that I'll be involved in later this year ...it's called GATECRASH and it will be a piece of theatre to remember.
This will be Zest's debut piece of theatre to take place in theatre venues as opposed to educational venues and it will be for an audience of anyone over the age of 12. Check out the website for more details...but make sure you see this...there's talk of a big tour next year.

www.zesttheatre.com

Time out is for thinking...

Thinking is definitely one of my most favourite things to do at the best and worst of times, and I have certainly been doing a lot of it over the last couple of months. It's been very difficult for personal reasons and has really tested me through and through. I think the main thing Ive realised through a lot of sadness and confusion is that I am grateful. I am grateful that I have some truly wonderful friends and people in my life; and although I do not have a lot of material things, I do have a lot of love from people. So with out wanting to sound too hippy, although I am finding some things extremely difficult, I am truly grateful for the love and support that has been shown to me and I am feeling more creative than ever.

I miss my piano when I work away. It was strange to come back to my home town and know that I can go to the piano whenever I wanted. So after having been back for a week, I am getting back into the habit of playing every day, I feel some songs coming very soon... I have also been listening to the wonderful  Bjork recently too; I'd like to think that although we don't or can't meet some of our favourite artists and people who inspire us, that they are unconditionally our friends through our appreciation for their work. So I'd like to share this beautiful song of hers and hope that it makes you feel like the picture shown above... regardless of what ever you are feeling at this moment
^ a happy sun in a grey sky.
What a deliciously gorgeous video directed by Chris Cunningham to compliment this piece too.

Time out is for exciting things...

The Gatecrash project with Zest already being very exciting for me, there are a couple of other personal things that are exciting too, here's one of them. My video art collaboration 'Fine Line' made with Katie Ness will be shown on loop from 12th - 14th APRIL at the Newquay Art8 festival next week. (I will blog a separate post for this shortly) which will be a great opportunity for me to hear some comments and also more importantly network with some other artists. The festival runs from 11th - 18th APRIL  and will have all kinds of art, from performance to poetry to hands on creating for everyone to take part in. If you are reading this and thinking about taking a weekend away (whatever day your respective 'weekends' are) then please do come along to this festival and come and check out Fine Line, I would love to hear your comments.

Preview Fine Line here, but come and see it on the big screen too! :)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aHik8i3F8cc

I will update you soon, as always thank you for reading. I will leave you with something I photographed as I was walking back to my van after a hard day on tour and a long thought provoking chat with Ed in Lincoln. It made me smile.

Lots of love folks

Equal Marriages!

Ok, so I definitely have been ranting about this (along with so many other people) on all the social networks Im part of already... HOWEVER... I'm going to just do it here as well... Because ... Well, I can, so here's my contribution!

Today, the Government have been deciding whether or not Marriage should be made available to homosexual couples as well as heterosexual couples.

Although it has initially been accepted, the debates and opinions of various different parties and people have both filled me with utter adoration and love for our humanity, as well as completely disgusted and shocked me that some people still think that it shouldn't have been allowed.

It seems there are a number of people (who have been willing to sign petitions and create both public and secret clubs and clans across the UK) who think that homosexual couples should not be allowed to have the option of marriage.

One website in particular that a friend of mine who is having a civil partnership next week posted on her Facebook wall really got my stomach churning... Please have a look:

www.c4m.org.uk

The dictionary definition (as of today) defines 'Marriage' as:

'The legal or religious ceremony that formalises the decision of two people to live as a married couple.'

To live as a married couple, we understand it to mean that you live as united partners who are in love with each other and devote themselves completely to that person; usually for better for worse, for richer or poorer, in sickness and in health, until death do them part.
There is no mention of the gender of these 'people' in this definition and certainly no implication of mandatory heterosexual orientation.

Yes, for thousands of years Marriage has historically always been between a man and a woman, usually within religious settings both aesthetically; for example in a church; and psychologically; consumed in the love and focus of God.

The definition of 'Love' (as of today) is:
1. a profoundly tender, passionate affection for another person.
2. a feeling of warm personal attachment or deep affection, as for a parent, child, or friend.
3. sexual passion or desire.

These are three out of the four distinct types of love that are described in the bible in greek as
1. 'Storge' (Family Love)
2. 'Philia' (Brotherly/Friendship Love)
3. 'Eros' (Romantic and sexual Love)

The other type of love described in the bible is called 'Agape' or 'divine love.'
This is referred to as 'the most powerful love' because it is a love that someone has for their faith in Jesus Christ and the bible. Essentially, it is a love of their faith in God.

But marriage has already been defined as EITHER a legal or religious ceremony and none of this debate is trying to enforce Churches or other places of worship to accept a marriage in their building if they are opposed to it, so this type of love is superfluous in this instance, as it isn't really something that affects the current situation today.

So here's my argument...

If the main focus of marriage is the celebration of two people who are in love; as in the full definition of love discussed above; then why does that celebration of love have to be limited ONLY to a man and a woman?

Surely, true love (and I'm using the word 'true' to embody the definition of love stated above) is completely uncontrollable beyond comprehension, because it is an emotion or (as stated) a feeling; it is not debatable because it simply exists, or it does not exist. How should it be possible to control who you fall in love with and therefore be able to control the gender of that person you fall in love with?
Isn't the feeling of being in love for a man with a woman the same as being in love for a woman with a woman, or a man with a man if it is 'real love'?

If your answer to that is no, then personally, I think you are not questioning whether or not it is true love; you are questioning religious beliefs, or the complexities of what being in love implies for yourself; your own perception of what being 'in love' means.

The local MP for Gainsborough and Horncastle (Lincolnshire UK) Edward Leigh argues that one of the main reasons traditional marriage should not be redefined is because it often produces offspring who need to be nurtured by a married mother and a father.

Similarly on the website www.c4m.org.uk
the 'umbrella group of individuals and organisations in the UK who (like Mister Leigh) support traditional marriage and oppose any plans to redefine it.'
say that:

'Marriage reflects the complementary natures of men and women. Although death and divorce may prevent it, the evidence shows that children do best with a married mother and a father.'

Marriage provides unity, it provides a loving void that surely heterosexual AND homosexual couples can offer just as well as each other?

Of course, healthy heterosexual couples are able to create and nurture a family if it is desired with no assistance from any third party; but it seems that Mister Leigh is implying that just because two people of the same sex cannot fully produce a new life naturally between themselves only, it is still seen as 'not normal' or 'wrong' that they should be allowed to BE parents let alone be GOOD parents.

Just because homosexual couples will not be able to naturally produce children without outside assistance, does that make it a reason to argue against the option of homosexual marriage?

Forgive me for going back to elemental human learning here, but I'm intrigued by this statement on the c4m website that implies that men and women also have set natures.
Their exclamation not only completely ignorantly stereotypes men and women, but also questions one genders' ability to nurture a child. There is no research that I am aware of that suggests that children 'do best with a married mother and father'
As opposed to a married mother and mother for instance.

In my opinion the ONLY 'complementary natures of men and women' that a person can clearly and accurately define as a male or female are those that differentiate their natural reproductive organs; the ability to create life.

Do we really need to discuss how complex human sexuality is, even within one particular sexual orientation? No woman is the same as another woman, nor is one man the same as another. Natures of men and women's personalities are not set and to say that they are a certain way is immature and quite frankly, ridiculous.
It seems like we're not even seeing a difference between someone's sexual orientation and someone's sexuality...which are of course two very different things indeed, neither of which should have any effect on their right to marriage.

So this leaves me wondering where are these perceptions of men and women coming from? And why are they affecting a couple's choice to be married if the wish; regardless of their sexual orientation?

For me the idea that only a man and woman can be married is a simple case of mindless bigotry; the complete antithesis of what the bible preaches...which I believe is to be generous, forgiving, and compassionate enough to love people unconditionally, (like Jesus.)

Making comments like:

'If marriage is redefined once, what is to stop it being redefined to allow polygamy?'

Is just a perfect example of discrimination and hypocrisy. The website states that
'no one should be allowed to redefine marriage'
but no one has actually mentioned 'polygamy.' This debate is about two people getting married, as it has always been..which as discussed earlier is the definition of marriage. Polygamy is something completely separate and has absolutely nothing to do with it.
The website goes on to say that legalising same sex marriages will jeopardise people's careers, and schools will have to change what we teach children about marriage, as if it will be an inconvenience to teachers or some kind of new language that nobody has been trained to deliver.

The message of marriage has not altered, nor has the sincerity or love which is sewn into it. It all just seems like a poor attempt to cover up their own gender discrimination.
I am interested to hear how these people define 'Love' to children. Maybe that's something to consider when observing a child's awareness of their own sexuality and self respect!? Do they know what love is?

Civil Partnership is different from a Marriage. It focuses mainly on friendship and companionship as the reason that the couple wish to unite. This is only celebrating one part of love.

I say lets give people, no matter who they wish to marry at least the opportunity to express the full beautiful extents and depths of love through marriage if they wish to do so, not only for themselves
but within a loving accepting society too; and for those who don't wish to be married, it will have no effect on them and everyone can feel happy.

Magic Music Muse

Recently in the tour van, one of the lads brought in a CD from a band called Frightened Rabbit. They absolutely blew me away. Raw, syncopated, heart felt and beautiful. I love it when something really resonates with where you are in your life and makes you remember how similar we all are.

Please take some time to give them a listen ...
This one called 'Poke' really got me by the heart.

What Would Charles Do?

Somebody must remember that wonderfully cheesy American series called Little House On the Prairie? Its about a 'perfect' working class family who haven't got a penny to rub together, but have ALL of the love in the world.

The father of this family is called Charles Ingalls. If he's not using a blunt axe so as not to win the log cutting race (and therefore embarrass the old respected elder) or, spending his last nickel on some fine fabric so his wife and mother of their children can make a dress for herself to look nice when she wins the pie making competition, or generally cutting off his right arm off to save a dying badger so his little girl will sleep at night... He's not doing enough.
It horribly stereotypes men and women, but it is within the context and time of when it was supposed to be set, and I suppose the 'Love conquers all' moral wins my heart every time.

Anyway, my sister and I used to watch it every Sunday together and grew up playing games where we pretended to rescue each other from burning linen baskets and falling trees in our little garden... We were our own heroes.

So this year, (after a very trying one in 2012) we decided that this would be the 'What would Charles do' year. We got tee shirts and made posters for each other at Christmas. (No right arms were cut off in the process) and now when ever I wear my tee, I feel pretty invincible.

So...here I am in my 'What would Charles do' t-shirt, I hope it inspires you to put your own hero on a t-shirt and share the love. (Let's keep it positive...no evil will win.)

Have an excellent day all. :D

A musical taste of JUST BY CHANCE

Just By Chance are a fabulous acoustic duo from Liverpool who I met at a gig when I was singing with Riot City. I ended up sitting having an accidental beer with Andy from the band one evening, as we appeared to share some mutual friends. So (as you do) we started talking about music.

After much chat about the lack of pianists in Liverpool, exactly how many films Leonardo DiCaprio had acted in, and general appreciation for each other's work, Andy asked me to arrange one of Just By Chance's songs for piano.

I was absolutely thrilled when I heard the song for the first time and very excited about arranging it on my piano.
'Ghosts' is a beautiful, dynamic track from their new album Upbound, and I am absolutely made up to have arranged a piano version and featured on their album.

Check out the links below to hear the song, and make sure you have a listen to their other stuff too; then you can go and see them live.. They're brilliant.
I would describe them as: excellently dry humoured, deliciously talented, beautiful vocal harmonies and genuinely lovely people who sometimes give out free cake. Go. And. See. Them. Now!

Love of my life

Pianos...

They are the one thing in the world (other than tea) that is a purely selfish pleasure of mine.
Ever since I learnt to play when I was 7, I have loved them, I still love them now. Playing them genuinely makes me feel comforted in the saddest moments and intensify the best. I would recommend anyone who is thinking of learning to do it. They are also the reason I believe I am good at bouldering, and opening jars. Hands of Zeus. :) I have a Kawai upright mahogany piano - I miss it so much when I work away, which is all the time (as always) that is the only down side to a piano I'd say. It's not mobile like a saxophone or violin or guitar etc. But what a pleasure when you can spend time with them and play.

Here's a piece of piano music that I love for its simplicity and utter satisfaction when playing it.
French musician Yann Tiersen, Comptine D'un Autre Ete (featured on the Amelie soundtrack)

This one above is one of the many old but wonderful pianos in the Roy Hart Centre (France)

And this one above is the same as the one which belongs to me.

Piano love.

There's a few reasons for this name..
(It's everything you're thinking) ..

Mainly though, my addiction is caffeine, as weak as that is. I love tea. Love it.
And I'm a bit angry that I know I could have still made my bus and made a cup of tea in time. But I didn't, so Im shaking. Profusely!

Green Day Morning

It's the 7:55am bus into rehearsals for 'Man Up' with Zest Theatre. It's been a while since I caught a regular bus to get anywhere... It throws me back to being 17 and at College listening to Green Day. What a band they were that got me through some tough days. The conversations are just the same...just different people. My god, I could actually feel as if I'm 17...
I'm going to listen to one Green Day track every day on these bus journeys for the entire run of these rehearsals before I get the van in honour of how good they were at getting me through.
I'll leave you with one of my favourite tracks, track 1 on Dookie. Burnout.

Also, you can check out the show I'm doing with Zest here, the company is awesome. This is my 4th year running I've worked for them, and the second time I've taken this show out. It's Hilarious. :D

Fine Line Project - Newquay 2013!

Fine Line is a video art collaboration written and produced by myself and UK artist Katie Ness that we finished last year. We're really super excited to announce that it has been accepted into an art festival this summer in the marvellous town centre of Newquay, Cornwall. It will be shown on loop for two days on Thursday 11th and Friday 12th April 2013.

The venue Fine Line will be exhibited at is called Travelogue Kernow situated in the Youth Centre on Chester Street in the centre of Newquay. The two days will include our video collaboration, print making and loads of other things to experience and get involved with.
Katie will hopefully be performing an original arabic dance piece too, so it's definitely going to be a fun couple of days not to be missed!

And who knows... Maybe we'll catch some good surf and fancy shell, not to mention a good authentic cornish pasty too!! :)

You can check out Fine Line here to read about our piece, and we hope to see you all there in April!

A Collaboration - Clouds and Light

This Clouds and Light project is something that has been created by wonderful French artist Didier Monge. I was very lucky to meet him during my first experience with Panthéâtre the Roy Hart Voice centre in southern France in 2006.

As we worked together we realised each others absolute love of music, and I think I remember a very excitable moment during one of the workshops where I jumped at his feet and said something along the lines of 'I have to work with you!'

So we kept in touch, and then last year he told me he was planning on writing an album of original music featuring and working with a select number of artists he'd met over some time. He asked me to write some lyrics/words, and he said he wanted to write some music for them as a collaboration. I could not have chosen a more perfect performance and piece of music to accompany the words I gave him. I feel very privileged to have worked with such an intuitive and lovely artist.

Hello!

So, I caved, I have a blog. Hello and thank you to whoever has a look at it. :)

As of today I hope to document the projects I've done so far and anything I do from now on. I'm so excited to think that I'll be able to look through these notes myself and see the way I've been thinking and how it's changed as I make my way through new ideas and thoughts. I'd like to say now that if you're reading this, and you're creative, I think you should get a blog.

I'm so excited and happy that my website is finished, and all thanks to the wonderful man that is Andrew Smith. I literally pointed at an imaginary structure/design, and some how, he managed to make me exactly what I wanted!
